Social Media Policy

As I continue to ponder the tagging incident at Mount Prospect Public Library, I wonder if libraries and the ALA should have a Social Media Policy.

There are many questions the policy would need to deal with.

  • Why create such a policy?
  • What is the purpose of Social Media within the library organization?
  • Who should be covered by the policy?
  • How does the policy impact employees?  Patrons?
  • When/how does the library implement such a policy?

There is a great post at Mashable on such a topic for businesses.  I could easily be adopted for use in libraries.

The Information Activist is moving

Fair readers,
The Information Activist has accepted a new position. I am excited about the wonderful people that I will get to work with. The move involves moving to Illinois. I am so excited to be returning to the city of librarians!

Library Poem

A Shakespearean sonnet I wrote about libraries:

The only American institution
where wise men are found
but all have an invitation
even those preached from the mound

It ensures our democracy
by letting all information free
without fail or hypocrisy
for even someone like me

For even in deafening silence
freedom of speech upheld
without death or violence
thirst of knowledge quelled

As long as the library remains steadfast
We ensure democracy will surely last
