Digital Textbooks — Remix and Mash-up

A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education points out that many textbook publishers are offering professors the ability to modify textbooks.  That is, professors can remove unnecessary elements (chapters) and add other pieces in.  This services has been around for some time, but was seldom used.

Well Create from McGraw-Hill allows professors to create electronic textbooks that mix-and-match from other McGraw-Hill books.  The many advantages include, a cheap book (The Chronicle example jumped from $6 for an electronic copy to $17 for a printed copy), decreasing information overload by reducing unnecessary chapters, tayloring the book to meet the needs of the particular class, etc…

The other interesting part of the article describes how professors will need to navigate various publisher websites to create such content.  All I know is that we really do live in interesting times!

Chicago Deskset — Game Night

Hi all,

When is the last time you hung out at the arcade? Come to Chicago Deskset’s game night at Dave & Buster’s. This is very low key — just games, beer and some time to hang out with your fellow Desksetters. Think of it as networking…with some DDR thrown in the mix.

We will meet up Friday, November 5th, after we have all finished work for the week. We can meet up out front at 7:30PM. If you show up late, no problem! Just wander around until you find Adam battling Tony at Star Wars Pod Racing 🙂

You can RSVP to the Facebook event and tell your friends! All are invited.

Hope to see you there!

Announcement: Libraries and Transliteracy

I have some awesome news.  The Information Activist will be a regular contributor to the awesome blog Libraries & Transliteracy. This group of awesome librarians support the role of libraries and librarians in terms of Transliteracy and 21st Century Skills.  I am passionate about the place of libraries in this new environment, and so excited to be part of this group.

Don’t worry though, I will still be here on a regular basis:)
