New Office for Intellectual Freedom Director

The ALA has announced that Barbara M. Jones will be the new head of the for Intellectual Freedom.  She will replace Judith Krug, who served the office with honor and distinction.

The ALA Press Release states ”

Twenty-first century IF issues are evolving quickly from those of the twentieth, due to the following: globalization of intellectual freedom issues; technology and privacy concerns; and an increasingly contentious civic discourse as witnessed in the recent health care Town Meetings…New intellectual freedom issues will need to be articulated in terms of our unchanging IF ideals – to the ALA membership, the general public, and to the organizations with which ALA collaborates.”

MLA Annual Conference

I just got back from the MLA annual conference.  I presented there, and will post something about that soon.  But for now I feel so complied to discuss a poster that I saw.

A library staff member is collecting and cataloging the community’s local music output.  I think this is the most awesome idea.  Not only are they expanding the reach of local artisits, but the are preserving music and genre too.

Berkeley Sit-in

The San Fransico Chronicle reports that students at UC Berkeley have stagged a sit-in to protest cuts to the library system.  Nearly 300 students along with a bunch of others protested.  Some even stayed the night and the protest lasted 24 hours.  How great is it when our patrons turn out to support us!
