Chicago DeskSet

I can’t believe that we have a over 80 people marked as coming or maybe coming to the first Chicago Deskset meeting!!!  I am so thankful and hopeful for all the changes that will be coming to our profession via grassroots organizations like this one.

We have even received shout outs from some great organizations like Dominican University’s LISSA and the Chicago Underground Library.

If you are interested in learning more or hanging out, please feel free to visit the Chicago Deskset blog or Facebook page

A great post on library advocates

My friend Leah over at La De Da has published a great post on the Importance of Library Advocates .  We all know that these tough times threaten the very existence of libraries.  But it’s post like these that give us hope.  I suggest checking it out to remind yourself of the importance of advocacy!!!

Literacy Defined

One of my doctoral classes is on literacy.  The class has really helped me redefine my understanding of what it means to be literate and the purpose for being literate.  When I entered the class I defined literacy as the ability to read and write.  Over the first few readings I defined literacy as the ability to understand abstract symbols of though.  Well that’s all changed.

I now define literacy as “The ability to create, express, participate or interpret abstract representations of knowledge or thought so that one may more fully participate in the society, community, legacy or political system in which they reside.”  It was in trying to understand the purpose of being literate that helped me redefine the term.  The reason for being literate is so that one can participate.
